Question 1

What is functional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Functional medicine is a systems-based approach that addresses root causes of disease rather than just treating symptoms. Practitioners take a comprehensive view of your health, considering genetics, lifestyle, environment, and underlying imbalances. Treatment plans are highly personalized and may include nutrition, supplements, lifestyle modifications, and targeted therapies to restore optimal function.

Question 2

How is functional medicine different from conventional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Functional medicine focuses on identifying and addressing root causes of illness through comprehensive assessment and personalized treatment. Conventional medicine often treats symptoms with medications. Functional medicine practitioners spend more time understanding your health history, use advanced testing, and create individualized treatment plans that address multiple systems simultaneously.

Question 3

What conditions can functional medicine help with?

Accepted Answer

Functional medicine can address chronic conditions, autoimmune diseases, digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, mood disorders, and complex health issues that haven't responded well to conventional treatment. The approach is particularly effective for conditions with multiple contributing factors. Many people turn to functional medicine when traditional approaches haven't provided answers.

Question 4

What should I expect during a functional medicine consultation?

Accepted Answer

Functional medicine consultations are typically longer and more comprehensive than conventional visits. Your practitioner will take a detailed health history, discuss lifestyle factors, review previous test results, and may order advanced diagnostic testing. The initial visit often lasts 60-90 minutes. Follow-up visits focus on reviewing results, adjusting treatment plans, and monitoring progress.

Question 5

Is functional medicine covered by insurance?

Accepted Answer

Coverage varies by insurance plan and provider. Some functional medicine services may be covered if provided by licensed physicians, while others are often out-of-pocket. Advanced testing and certain treatments may not be covered. Many clinics offer cash-pay pricing and can provide itemized receipts. Check with your insurance provider and clinic about specific coverage options.
