Question 1

What is lifestyle medicine?

Accepted Answer

Lifestyle medicine uses evidence-based lifestyle interventions to prevent, treat, and reverse chronic diseases. The approach focuses on six pillars: nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, avoiding risky substances, and social connection. Lifestyle medicine practitioners help you make sustainable changes that address root causes of health issues rather than just managing symptoms.

Question 2

What conditions can lifestyle medicine help with?

Accepted Answer

Lifestyle medicine can help prevent and manage chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, obesity, hypertension, and certain autoimmune conditions. The approach is particularly effective for conditions influenced by diet, exercise, stress, and sleep. Many people use lifestyle medicine to reduce medication dependence and improve overall quality of life.

Question 3

How is lifestyle medicine different from dieting?

Accepted Answer

Lifestyle medicine focuses on sustainable, evidence-based changes to multiple lifestyle factors, not just diet. It addresses nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, and social factors holistically. Unlike fad diets, lifestyle medicine is based on scientific research and aims for long-term health improvements rather than quick fixes. The approach is personalized and considers your unique circumstances.

Question 4

Do I need to make all lifestyle changes at once?

Accepted Answer

No, lifestyle medicine practitioners typically help you make gradual, sustainable changes over time. The approach focuses on small, manageable steps that build on each other. You'll work together to prioritize changes based on what will have the biggest impact and what you can realistically maintain. Success comes from consistency, not perfection.

Question 5

Is lifestyle medicine covered by insurance?

Accepted Answer

Coverage varies by insurance plan and provider type. Some insurance plans cover lifestyle medicine consultations when provided by licensed physicians. However, many programs and services may be out-of-pocket. Some employers offer wellness programs that include lifestyle medicine. Check with your insurance provider and clinic about specific coverage options.
