What is nutrition therapy?

Nutrition therapy involves using food and nutritional interventions to prevent and treat health conditions. Registered dietitians and nutrition therapists assess your nutritional status, create personalized meal plans, and provide guidance on dietary changes. The approach addresses nutrient deficiencies, food sensitivities, metabolic issues, and uses nutrition to support overall health and healing.

What conditions can nutrition therapy help with?

Nutrition therapy can help with diabetes, heart disease, digestive disorders, food allergies and sensitivities, weight management, autoimmune conditions, and various chronic diseases. Many people use nutrition therapy to optimize health, improve energy, manage symptoms, and support medical treatment plans. The approach is particularly effective for conditions influenced by diet.

Do I need to follow a strict diet?

Nutrition therapy focuses on sustainable, personalized approaches rather than rigid diets. Your nutrition therapist will work with you to create a plan that fits your lifestyle, preferences, and health needs. The goal is to make realistic changes you can maintain long-term. Plans are adjusted based on your progress, challenges, and changing needs over time.

How long does nutrition therapy take to see results?

Results vary by condition and individual. Some people notice improvements in energy, digestion, or symptoms within days to weeks of dietary changes. More significant changes may take several weeks to months. Chronic conditions often require ongoing nutritional support. Your nutrition therapist will set realistic expectations and help you track progress.

Is nutrition therapy covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by insurance plan. Many plans cover nutrition therapy when provided by registered dietitians for specific medical conditions like diabetes or kidney disease. However, preventive or general wellness nutrition counseling may not be covered. Some clinics offer cash-pay options. Check with your insurance provider about coverage for nutrition therapy services.
