What Is Neurofeedback?
EEG biofeedback that provides real-time feedback from scalp electrical activity. Evidence is mixed and condition-specific; qEEG does not diagnose ADHD, and benefits should be verified with blinded or functional outcomes.

Neurofeedback is a form of EEG biofeedback: scalp electrodes measure electrical activity and software changes audio or visual feedback when a selected signal meets a threshold. It does not stimulate the brain with current, and a qEEG map is not itself a diagnosis.
Evidence is condition-specific and mixed. For ADHD, unblinded parent ratings can improve, but effects are smaller or uncertain with blinded outcomes and active controls. Evidence for insomnia, anxiety, concussion, migraine and cognitive enhancement is not sufficient to treat neurofeedback as established stand-alone care. Use a time-limited adjunctive trial with validated symptoms and daily function.
Arrive with clean, dry hair and bring medication and symptom information. Maintain usual prescribed treatment unless the treating clinician changes it.
No routine downtime. Temporary fatigue, headache, irritability or sleep change should be recorded and prompt protocol review.
Physical risk appears low but has not been thoroughly characterized across protocols. Possible headache, fatigue, irritability, anxiety or sleep disruption may occur. The larger harms are delayed evidence-based care, false diagnostic claims from qEEG, and costly open-ended treatment. Coordinate seizure, bipolar, migraine and photosensitivity concerns with an appropriate clinician.
