What Is an Executive Physical?
An executive physical bundles history, examination, preventive planning, labs, and sometimes imaging or performance tests. Quality depends on evidence-based selection, continuity, and follow-up—not the number of tests.

Executive physicals compress preventive and diagnostic services into one or several coordinated visits. Programs range from a careful primary-care review to broad imaging and specialty panels.
Potential value
Protected time, record review, family history, vaccination, guideline-based screening, cardiovascular risk, medication reconciliation, physical function, and a written follow-up plan can improve care—especially for people who have deferred routine care.
More testing can cause harm
Large panels and whole-body scans increase incidental findings, false positives, radiation or contrast exposure, anxiety, procedures, and cost. A same-day package may discover something but still fail if no clinician owns confirmation and long-term management.
Not the same as an Annual Wellness Visit
A Medicare Annual Wellness Visit develops or updates a prevention plan and is not a comprehensive head-to-toe physical. An executive physical is usually cash-pay and may include services that insurance does not cover.
Judge the program by decisions
Ask which elements follow accepted screening guidance, which are optional or investigational, how abnormal and incidental results are managed, and how the program coordinates with primary and specialty care.
Bring complete records, imaging, medications and supplements, family history, vaccination and screening dates, symptoms, preferences, and insurance details. Follow test-specific fasting or exercise instructions.
Most visits require no recovery. Sedation, contrast, exercise testing, or invasive procedures have separate aftercare instructions.
False positives and negatives, incidental findings, overdiagnosis, unnecessary imaging or biopsy, radiation or contrast exposure, anxiety, privacy concerns, fragmented care, and substantial out-of-pocket cost.
