What Is PEMF Therapy?
PEMF devices use time-varying magnetic fields to induce small electrical fields in tissue. Prescription bone-growth stimulators have specific FDA-approved indications; wellness mats and broad recovery claims are not equivalent.

Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy uses a coil carrying changing current to generate a time-varying magnetic field. Dose depends on waveform, frequency, pulse width, amplitude, duty cycle, coil geometry, distance, session length, and target.
Indication-specific devices
Prescription noninvasive bone-growth stimulators include PEMF devices with FDA premarket approval for defined nonunion or spinal-fusion indications. Approval of one model for one indication does not validate consumer mats for pain, sleep, circulation, “cell charging,” or wellness.
Evidence
Musculoskeletal trials are heterogeneous. Some report short-term symptom benefit, while newer analyses find inconsistent or potentially small effects with uncertain clinical importance. Device parameters cannot be assumed interchangeable.
Important distinctions
Static magnetic bracelets create an unchanging field and lack conclusive pain evidence. TMS uses specialized high-intensity coils to stimulate cortex under condition-specific FDA clearances. A wellness PEMF mat is not TMS.
Safety
Screen implanted electronic devices, metal, pregnancy, seizure risk near the head, active bleeding, cancer at the target, and model-specific contraindications.
Bring diagnosis, imaging, implant cards, medications, pregnancy status, seizure and cancer history, and exact device information.
Usually none. Report new pain, dizziness, headache, skin irritation, palpitations, neurologic symptoms, or implanted-device changes.
Headache, dizziness, tingling, skin irritation, symptom flare, implanted-device interference, metal concerns, delayed effective treatment, and financial harm from unsupported claims.
