Aesthetic medicine includes elective treatments intended to change appearance without traditional surgery. It spans prescription drugs such as botulinum toxin, implanted devices such as dermal fillers, powered devices such as lasers and radiofrequency systems, mechanical treatments, chemical peels, and topical skin care. These are not one risk category.
Match the treatment to the tissue and goal
Regulation is product- and indication-specific
“FDA-approved” and “FDA-cleared” are not interchangeable. Drugs may be approved; devices are commonly cleared for a specific intended use. A cleared device does not make every body area, setting, combination, or marketing claim authorized. Cosmetic products are regulated differently and generally do not undergo premarket approval. Ask for the exact product or device, manufacturer, indication, lot number, and whether the use is on-label or off-label.
Provider and setting matter
Legal scope varies by state. Before treatment, identify the person performing it, their license and procedure-specific training, who supervises them, and who can manage complications in person. The clinic should obtain medical history, screen for body-image or expectation concerns, take standardized photographs with consent, explain alternatives, quote total cost, and provide written aftercare and emergency instructions.
Plan conservatively
Natural-looking results are subjective and not guaranteed. Layering multiple procedures increases cost and can obscure which treatment caused benefit or harm. Start with the least invasive option that addresses a defined goal, allow adequate healing, and reassess before purchasing a package.
Avoid changing prescribed medication without the treating clinician. Disclose anticoagulants, isotretinoin history, cold sores, implants, pregnancy or breastfeeding, allergy history, prior filler and permanent products, tendency to scar or pigment, and all recent procedures. Obtain a written quote and aftercare plan.
Recovery ranges from hours after some injectables to weeks or months after deeper resurfacing or complications. Follow sun protection and wound care. Contact the clinic promptly for unexpected pain, discoloration, blistering, drainage, fever, eye symptoms, or weakness.
Bruising, swelling, pain, infection, allergy, asymmetry, nodules, pigment change, scarring, burns, nerve injury, unwanted fat loss, poor cosmetic result, and need for corrective care. Rare emergencies include filler vascular occlusion with necrosis, stroke or blindness; systemic botulinum toxin effects; severe infection; and airway or eye injury.
