What Is Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting)?
Prescription device treatment that cools selected pinchable fat bulges. It is not weight loss, and a rare complication—paradoxical adipose hyperplasia—causes the treated area to enlarge and may require surgery.
Prescription device treatment that cools selected pinchable fat bulges. It is not weight loss, and a rare complication—paradoxical adipose hyperplasia—causes the treated area to enlarge and may require surgery.

Cryolipolysis, commonly associated with the CoolSculpting® brand, uses controlled cooling and often vacuum suction to injure fat cells in a selected bulge. The body gradually clears damaged cells over several months. Device clearance is applicator- and body-area-specific.
Body contouring, not weight loss
Cryolipolysis is intended for localized, pinchable subcutaneous fat—not obesity treatment, visceral fat, major weight reduction, or skin tightening. Scale weight may not change. A clinic should distinguish fat from lax skin, muscle separation, edema, and hernia.
Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia
PAH is unique to fat freezing: the treated tissue enlarges and firms instead of shrinking, often in the shape of the applicator. It usually appears two to five months later, does not resolve on its own, and may require liposuction or surgery. The consent should state the clinic’s recognition, referral, and correction policy.
Other safety issues
Cold-sensitivity disorders, impaired circulation or sensation, open skin, and hernia in or near the treatment site can increase risk. Numbness and pain may persist; rare severe neuropathic pain, cold injury, or contour deformity can occur. Home fat-freezing safety and effectiveness are not established.
Disclose cold agglutinin disease, cryoglobulinemia, paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, Raynaud symptoms, poor circulation, neuropathy, hernia, pregnancy, open skin, recent surgery, anticoagulants, and prior body-contouring procedures.
Redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness, cramping, firmness, tingling, and numbness can last days to weeks. Delayed severe pain or a firm enlarging bulge over subsequent months requires evaluation.
Pain, bruising, swelling, numbness, altered sensation, neuropathic pain, cold injury, skin damage, contour irregularity, hernia-related complications, and paradoxical adipose hyperplasia that may require surgery. Results may be absent or asymmetric.
