Kybella® is prescription deoxycholic acid approved to improve the appearance of moderate-to-severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat in adults. It disrupts cell membranes in the injected fat, producing inflammation and gradual clearance. Approval does not extend to arbitrary body areas or unbranded “fat-dissolving” mixtures.
Diagnosis before injection
Neck fullness may reflect fat, skin laxity, muscle anatomy, salivary glands, thyroid enlargement, lymph nodes, or other structures. Kybella treats selected submental fat; it does not tighten significant loose skin and can make laxity more apparent.
Expected course
Marked swelling is common after treatment and can last days to weeks. Results develop gradually and often require multiple sessions. The label permits up to a defined series, but patients should reassess benefit and anatomy before each session rather than automatically completing a package.
Key risks
Injection near the marginal mandibular nerve can cause an uneven smile or facial weakness. Dysphagia, bruising, pain, numbness, hardness, skin ulceration, necrosis, infection, and vascular injury are possible. Correct landmarking and depth are essential.
