Lymphatic Therapy Types Explained
A map of MLD, pneumatic compression, CDT, garments, and spa ‘detox drainage.’ Use this to read a clinic menu without mixing NormaTec, Vodder, and lymphedema bandaging.
Overview
Lymphatic types are how you decode the menu. Hands, pumps, and medical CDT are not interchangeable. Dry brushing and a deep-tissue “lymphatic sculpt” are usually not MLD.
The usual map
MLD: light, rhythmic, directional. Vodder and related schools. 45–90 minutes. See manual lymphatic drainage.
Pneumatic compression: sequenced sleeves/boots, 20–45 minutes, wellness or prescribed EPC. See compression therapy.
CDT: MLD + bandaging/garments + skin + exercise for lymphedema. See CDT.
Static garments / stockings: all-day pressure, not a pump session.
Spa lymphatic / detox: often ordinary massage with a story. Ask what training they have and what pressure they use.
How to choose
Flight puffiness or training recovery: pump or a honest wellness MLD after a clot screen. Post-op: surgeon rules, often MLD with a therapist who does that surgery. Diagnosed lymphedema: CDT, not a 4-pack of boots. If they cannot tell MLD from Swedish, you are buying a massage.

You should know whether you were bandaged, pumped, or given homework. If you only feel ‘worked on,’ ask what type that was.

Wrong type delays real lymphedema care or misses DVT because a spa treated ‘toxins.’
